Two sidewalks merge

we walk

side by side synchronized strangers

matched awkwardly by fate

It is too intimate

this pace we are in

and I am unsure yet unyielding

in this connection

Perhaps I know you

and we are lovers

grown bored in the rhythm of familiarity

which seems offensive

Perhaps we are married

and we have children

or maybe we don’t and that is the reason

you won’t look at me

Perhaps you want to stop

and ask for permission

to leave because I am troubled

by the tedium of you

I never wanted

you, never asked

for your invasion insistently impetuous

in the pace of my life

A lifetime has passed

in seconds and for seconds

I ponder about withdrawing

but you are gone
